Wermhat didn’t last very long, considering his only attack move was BIDE.
Oh no. D: You should’ve spent hours switching him in and out of battle, like I trained everything when I was 12!
I hope you find something longer-lived eventually. Or you could ridiculously overlevel your starter and blow through everything that way. I guess that would work, too.
I did but that was SO BORING. Regularly leveling him worked for a little while…until it didn’t.
I recently started playing (you inspired me…), though not Nuzlocke. I’ve been just sticking my weakest pokemon up front, and immediately switching to a strong one once combat starts. Maybe this changes in later versions (I’m playing my first post-Gen1 game ever, omg), but nothing ever seems to attack before I can recall.
Switch training, Monica! SWITCH TRAINING!
While it can be really boring, for a Nuzlocke I’d definitely suggest grinding in the grass with your starter until it reaches Level 12 or so. (You don’t have to evolve it when it hits Level 16 if you don’t want to yet!) Then, with a Pokémon like Wermhat, you could put ‘im in the lead position, switch ‘im out for your starter, and just keep this up until he hits Level 8 and you feel confident he can handle the wilds on his own. Have him fight until he too hits 12 or 13, and then decide whether you want to press on to Roxanne yet or not.
Recycle this strategy, but with the levels boosted, every time you press on into a new area. Your goal should always be to have your starter 5-10 levels ahead of the wild Pokémon and at least one trusted teammate about 5 levels ahead.
Be mindful of critical hits.
Make a mental game of — and comic gold of — the monotonous grinding to be done on occasion. Imagine it as this really awesome, Karate Kid-esque stuff. Wax that shit off and on like there was no tomorrow!
One thing you could consider doing if you like is killing two birds with one stone and EV training a physical sweeper whilst grinding. This is because Hoenn’s early grass is just chock, chock filled with Pokémon who award 1 Speed EV or 1 Attack EV. May not be the greatest idea with Lucky, I dunno, but I think it’d be a pretty solid idea if you happen to get another Zigzagoon or a Zubat. Not only would they appreciate the EVs in the proper columns but you’d be up-leveling them too. Two birds, one stone, all wins for Monica.
Good luck! And remember — HAVE FUN WITH IT! :)
The epitome of “HAVE FUN WITH IT!” right here.
Is it just me or is this not going so well o_O
It’s not as bad as it could have gone. I’ve come across a couple one-and-done Nuzlockes, with the opening rival battle ending in a loss.
Another one bites the dust!
Pokemon always sort ignored the whole natural selection thing by never showing Pokemon killing other Pokemon.
This is going to be one lonely journey
It is what one chooses to make of it. If Monica doesn’t wish to grind at all, then she certainly doesn’t have to. But if what would make her happiest is getting to the end of the game with her tried-and-true team of Nuzlocke heroes, then she’s probably going to want to start grinding now, at least for the immediate future, or else risk a total wipeout before she can even bid Brawly farewell. It’s one of those Ants-and-the-Grasshopper situations: hard work now begets survival when the going gets tough later.
Ultimately, I hope that whichever path she chooses to take, it’s the path which brings her the most satisfaction and happiness with this experiment.
i hope you plan on EV training
Just read through all your comics again. It’s all pretty rad, love seeing the evolution of your pen. I was never really into the Pokemans thing (sorry), save watching a few episodes with my cousins. I will say this though, reading all your comics REALLY made me want to play pokemon games, and/or watch the show.
Wermhat. That is so awesome. You are awesome.
Well that’s certainly not Nuptup…
Hey Monica just wanna say thanks for the awesome book and my drawing, it made my day seeing it in the mail! : 3 If you ever wanna duel when pokemon x/y comes out I’m game.
Hope your Nuzlocke run goes better then these first few pages though. >.>
Finally got your awesome book. Just made my day %9000 better.
Shiftry may look cool, but It sucks a lot on the 3rd gen since he can’t get STABs that are attk. due to the way Special and normal attack is handled on that gen… I know because i could never make him not suck
GOD DAMN IT SHIFTRY, ONE WOULD BELIEVE “BITE” IMPLIED USING YOUR PHYSICAL STRENGTH:
